Middle School Education, Bachelor of Science (B.S.): Mathematics and Science Area of Concentration
What is Middle School Education?
The Middle School Education, Mathematics and Science Area Concentration, Teaching Program (an undergraduate major) is designed to prepare candidates to earn a Bachelor of Science degree and to meet the MSDE requirements for dual certification in mathematics and science grades 4-9. The program courses are closely aligned with standards set by the State of Maryland and the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE).
Students take a set of mathematics and science courses. The mathematics courses are particularly geared toward middle school teacher candidates. They include courses in mathematical problem solving, numbers and operations, algebra and geometry, and statistics and probability. The science component includes physics, chemistry, biology, and atmospheric and geological sciences courses. All candidates also take education courses in middle-level philosophy and pedagogy, equity and diversity, science and mathematics teaching methods, and adolescent development.
Pathways:
The undergraduate pathway prepares you to teach both math and science in middle school. If you are an incoming freshman or a community college transfer, you will be on track to earn a Bachelor’s degree in four years. If you are currently an undergraduate student at Maryland but are thinking about changing your major, you might still be able to earn your degree in four years. You could also add a fifth year and earn both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Education!
The graduate pathway prepares you to teach either math or science in the middle school. If you hold a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland or another institution, you are eligible to earn a Master’s degree in Education.
