In this course, we will explore how philosophical and historical perspectives can deepen our understanding of science. We will consider how history and philosophical views on the nature of science can be integrated effectively into science classrooms, both to teach concepts and to elucidate processes of inquiry, research, and discovery. We will practice doing science and considering how what we experience in scientific inquiry applies to classroom science teaching.

This is a reading intensive course. The assigned readings for this course vary in length, and you are encouraged to read thoughtfully in all cases. Lightly skimming the material will not adequately prepare you for the level of critical thinking and engagement you are expected to display in class discussions, especially because the class is very small.  You are also required to do additional research and reading to complete assignments as described below. (Keep this in mind when budgeting your time for this course.)
